Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Westchester County, NY
Worn, scratched, or dated hardwood floors do not always need to be replaced. At Allen Carpet & Home, our hardwood floor refinishing service restores the wood you already have, bringing tired floors back to life at a fraction of the cost of replacement. Serving homeowners in Yonkers, Mohegan Lake, Mt. Kisco, and throughout Westchester County, our team combines more than a century of family flooring experience with the craftsmanship to make your floors look beautiful again.
Refinishing is one of the smartest investments you can make in an older home. It preserves the original character, patina, and proportions of your hardwood, keeps quality materials out of the landfill, and delivers a dramatic transformation in the rooms you use every day.
What Is Hardwood Floor Refinishing?
Refinishing renews solid hardwood floors by removing the old, worn finish along with surface scratches, scuffs, and discoloration, then sealing the wood with a fresh protective coating. The result is a clean, renewed floor that looks years younger and is protected for years to come. For floors that are structurally sound but cosmetically tired, refinishing is almost always the better choice than full replacement.
When to Refinish vs. Replace
If your hardwood is solid and stable underfoot, with damage limited mostly to the surface, it is likely an excellent candidate for refinishing. Original hardwood discovered beneath old carpet is often in great shape, since the carpet protected it for years. On the other hand, wood that flexes underfoot, shows deep water damage, or has been sanded down many times in the past may need replacement.
When refinishing is not the right answer, we offer a wide selection of new hardwood so you can match the species, width, and tone to the rest of your home. In moisture-prone spaces where solid wood is not ideal, we can also recommend water-resistant luxury vinyl that delivers a convincing wood look. The most reliable way to know which path fits your floors is a professional assessment, which we are happy to provide.

Refinishing for Westchester's Older Homes
Westchester County is full of homes with beautiful original hardwood, from the pre-war apartments and historic single-family houses of Yonkers to the Victorians and Colonials of Mt. Kisco and the older homes and converted cottages around Mohegan Lake. Each of these homes has its own character, and refinishing honors that character rather than covering it up.
Our team understands how older homes and the local climate affect wood floors, including the dry winter conditions created by radiator and forced-air heating and the natural expansion and contraction of wood through the seasons. That local knowledge informs how we approach every refinishing project.
A Full-Service Approach
Refinishing is part of our complete suite of flooring services. If your project reveals an uneven or damaged subfloor, we handle subfloor repair and underlayment. If a room has experienced water intrusion, we offer flood service to help restore it. We also coordinate and supervise the work, so your project stays organized from start to finish.
This integrated approach matters in older homes, where you do not always know what you will find until the old flooring comes up. Having one team that can assess, repair, and refinish keeps surprises from derailing your renovation.
Caring for Your Refinished Floors
Once your floors are refinished, a little care keeps them looking their best. Use felt pads under furniture, place area rugs in high-traffic paths and entryways to catch grit, and clean with products designed for wood. We also offer custom area rugs and rug binding, so you can have a rug sized perfectly to protect and complement your renewed floors.
